Computer science studies how information is stored, transmitted and processed in systems ranging from single processors to networked computer systems to living cells, brains, and social organizations.
At UNM, students learn computing from all perspectives — programming, algorithms, data structures, networking, and architecture — while developing the analytical skills required for
computation-based problem solving.
That foundation is complemented by a required minor and a series of interdisciplinary electives, including computer security, digital media, computational biology, graphics, networks, complex systems, and artificial intelligence.
Students can choose a digital media focus with an interdisciplary film and digital media (IFDM) minor.
CS faculty are often featured in interdisciplinary publications such as Foreign Affairs, Wired News, Nature Physics, Nature, Slashdot,
and Network World.

Computer Science at UNM offers a wide range of research from computer and internet security to computer programming.
How do you turn ones and zeros into hope and then patent your idea?
UNM students working with Assistant Professor of Computer Science Sean Luan developed a novel way of doing complex calculations to position radiation beams and improve cancer treatment. Now they are seeking a patent through STC.UNM, which commercializes
intellectual property resulting from UNM research.

Computer scientists create and manipulate computer programs to solve problems, classify and analyze data, and create graphic images. The constant growing need for information technology that is spread worldwide challenges computer scientists to analyze and design programs, databases and networks that address the advancing needs of civilization.
